Storyteller Rob McCabe has been delighting audiences with his unique brand of storytelling theatre where he weaves a magical web around his listeners and holds them captive until the end of his programs. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Theatre Arts and a Masters of Science in Library and Information Science, and has worked as a youth and young adult librarian. He is a member of the National Storytelling Network, the Detroit Story League, the
Parent-Tellers, (a group of storytellers who perform stories in school settings), and the Ann Arbor Storytellers’ Guild. He has also been an avid reader since childhood.

“My mother used to tell me something which has stuck with me to this very day. She used to say, ‘Remember, you are never alone when you have a book for a friend.’ From my earliest recollections, I was always exposed to books and stories. My father would read the myths and legends of Ancient Greece and Rome along with the stories and poems of Edgar Allan Poe to me for hours. I always loved the sound of the spoken word and made up my mind at a very early age that I was going to pursue theatre as a career. It was just a small step for me from theatre to storytelling.”

He has also traveled throughout the metropolitan Detroit area offering storytelling and writing workshops as well as performances.

“I always tell my students and listeners that the primary step that all storytellers take is to read voraciously. Through reading and research, the storyteller finds the primary source material from which they work. By utilizing storytelling, students will further develop their listening skills, reading comprehension, cognitive reasoning, build imagination, help them develop confidence in themselves, and develop a multicultural awareness of the world around them. Some of the ways that storytelling can further enhance the educative process is through writing assignments, reading, and using storytelling and theatre games to stimulate and further develop their imagination.”

As a child, he traveled throughout Europe and the United States and as a result, has brought many multicultural aspects to his performances.
“I always love to use another language when doing my storytelling. My mother comes from Colombia and I sometimes use Hispanic phrases to add a new dimension to my storytelling.”

Some of his program titles include: Long Ago and Far Away: Stories from Around the World; The Horror of It All: A Program of Terrifying Tales; It’s All Greek to Me: Greek and Roman Legends and Mythology and others.

He offers workshops and parties for children and adults.
